Alabama band mates Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry, and Randy Owen join the Museum's Michael Gray at the CMA Theater to discuss their genre-broadening, record-setting career, and the path that led to Alabama’s 2005 election to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
During the 2016 program, the founding Alabama band members help expand on themes explored in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibition "Alabama: Song of the South," including family harmony, small-town Southern pride, and the distinct loyalty of Alabama fans.
Cook, Gentry, and Owen open the interview and performance by playing "short versions" of Alabama's first #1 single, "Tennessee River," and "Feels So Right," their fourth #1 single.
Over the course of the hour-plus program, the three Alabama band members also share their earliest memories of each other, their pre-Alabama bands, the musical influence of early Beatles on early Alabama (when they were known as Wild Country), and later, what it was like transitioning from playing for tips to having a #1 record.
They also perform fellow Country Music Hall of Fame member Merle Haggard’s "Sing Me Back Home," and a mix of Alabama songs, including "Dixieland Delight" (a hit from their 1983 album "The Closer You Get..."), and two title-track chart-toppers: the Owen- and Gentry-penned "My Home’s in Alabama," and Owen's "Mountain Music."
"Alabama: Song of the South" exhibition dates: August 25, 2016 through June 25, 2017.
