During this 2015 panel discussion, Ron Cornelius, Charlie Daniels, Sylvie Simmons, and Bob Wilson talk about Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, as part of a series of educational events held in support of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s exhibition “Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City.” The conversation concentrates on Dylan and Cohen’s strong ties to Nashville.
Nashville musicians Cornelius and Daniels worked on classic 1960s and ’70s recordings by Dylan and Cohen, and also toured extensively with Cohen—including an appearance at the legendary 1970 Isle of Wight festival. Wilson played piano on Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline” and “Self Portrait,” as well as other rock and folk albums featured in the exhibit. Veteran music journalist and award-winning author Simmons wrote the acclaimed, comprehensive biography “I’m Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen.”
The panelists describe their relationship to producer Bob Johnston, who hired the musicians to record with Dylan and Cohen and provided Simmons key information for her book. Simmons also provides details about Cohen living and recording in Nashville, and his interest in country music.
Cornelius and Daniels discuss working with Cohen in the recording studio and on the road, including their performance at the Isle of Wight festival. All three musicians share stories about creating music with Dylan in the studio. “New Morning” and “To Be Alone with You” are among the songs discussed.
