To coincide with Black Music Month, the Museum and co-producers Rissi Palmer and Shannon Sanders organized a multi-artist concert celebrating the many ways Black Americans have created, contributed to, and been influenced by country music, as documented and shared through the Museum’s multi-faceted initiative, “From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music.” This concert, held in the Museum’s CMA Theater, was recorded on June 18, 2024, and presented by Amazon and Riverview Foundation.
During the concert, Blanco Brown, Cowboy Troy, Tony Jackson, Hubby Jenkins, Miko Marks, Wendy Moten, Rissi Palmer, Darius Rucker, The War and Treaty, and Barrence Whitfield performed their songs featured on the box set and paid tribute to other artists featured in the collection. Throughout the night, the house band—led by Sanders and featuring Tyler Cain, Rob Cureton, Kery Greene, Olivia Jones, Jon “DJ Smoke” Lucas, MarQo Patton and Lars Thorson—accompanied the artists. The concert concluded with an all-cast performance of the Staple Singers’ rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”
Originally released in 1998 by the Museum and Warner Music Group, “From Where I Stand” returned in 2024 as a multifaceted, educational initiative including an expanded CD box set, this concert celebration, and a free-to-access online experience. The collection spans a century of music, including a fresh wave of Black performers who emerged through 2020, and new essays by recording artists Rhiannon Giddens and Rissi Palmer join the box set’s original essays by distinguished music scholars and journalists. The online experience includes all of the box set’s music, essays, and track notes, as well as archival video and resources for educators.
