Songwriter Mike Reid performs and tells stories from throughout his career as part of the Museum’s weekly Songwriter Session series. This program was recorded on September 12, 2026.
Reid opens the program with Tim McGraw’s #1 hit “Everywhere” and Wynonna Judd’s “To Be Loved By You,” a song he originally wrote with Celine Dion in mind. He also performs and shares the story behind his Grammy-winning Ronnie Milsap hit, “Stranger in My House.” Reid describes the surprising creative evolution of what would become Bonnie Raitt’s iconic single “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” as well. Additional songs performed include Raitt’s “Too Soon to Tell” and an unreleased track about Reid’s extended family and upbringing in Pennsylvania, “Family Tree.” The acclaimed songwriter closes out the program with an intimate rendition of his hit song “Walk on Faith.”
Following an All-Pro football career with the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1970s, Reid became a force in country music. He wrote a string of #1 hits for Ronnie Milsap, including “Lost in the Fifties Tonight (In the Still of the Night)” and “She Keeps the Home Fires Burning.” Reid’s other #1 songs include “Forever’s as Far as I’ll Go” (Alabama) and “In This Life” (Collin Raye). He also co-wrote songs recorded by the Judds, Willie Nelson, the Oak Ridge Boys, Tanya Tucker, Conway Twitty, and Don Williams. In 2025, Reid released “Time & Life,” a collaborative album with fellow Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Joe Henry.
