Songwriter Ronnie Bowman answers questions from the audience, performs, and tells stories behind some of the songs he has written. Part of the Museum’s “Live at the Hall” series, this live performance was recorded on August 6, 2022.
During the show, Bowman discusses his inspiration for becoming a songwriter and even plays the first song he ever wrote for his mother. He also delves into his successful writing relationship with Chris Stapleton. In support of the exhibition “Chris Stapleton: Since 1978,” Bowman performs songs co-written with Stapleton, including Kenny Chesney’s “Billboard” Hot Country Songs chart-topper, “Never Wanted Nothing More”; Stapleton’s 2016 Academy of Country Music Song of the Year, “Nobody to Blame”; and two songs that have yet to be recorded: “Livin’ the Life” and “It Takes a Woman.”
Bowman’s songs have also been recorded by Brooks & Dunn, the Grascals, Cody Johnson, Irene Kelley, Jake Owen, Ralph Stanley, Sam Williams, and Lee Ann Womack. From 1990 to 2001, Bowman served as vocalist and bass player for the bluegrass group Lonesome River Band, during which time their 1991 album “Carrying the Tradition” was named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Album of the Year. Bowman has also won multiple IBMA awards for his solo music, including Song of the Year honors for “Cold Virginia Night” and “Three Rusty Nails” and three Male Vocalist of the Year awards.
