Dierks Bentley discusses his musical influences, recounts his early days in Nashville, and performs some of his hit songs with co-writers during this in-depth 2016 interview at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Bentley remembers growing up in Phoenix and listening to country stars including Clint Black, Alan Jackson, and Marty Stuart, as well as rock artist Billy Idol. His decision to move to Nashville, Bentley says, was influenced by Hank Williams Jr.’s music.
Calling back to his early Nashville days, Bentley talks about working with cable television channel the Nashville Network and using his TNN connection to frequent the Grand Ole Opry backstage area (until the Opry caught on and limited his visits). The singer-songwriter also describes the welcoming music community he found at Nashville venue The Station Inn.
Songs Dierks Bentley performs during the program include: “Up On The Ridge,” the title track from his 2010 bluegrass-based album (joined by co-writer Angelo Petraglia); “What Was I Thinkin’,” with Jon Randall; “Am I the Only One” with Jim Beavers; “I Hold On” with Brett James; and “Drunk on a Plane,” “Freedom,” and “Somewhere on a Beach” with Ross Copperman.
Bentley’s well-worn guitar, on display in the Museum’s exhibition “Dierks Bentley: Every Mile a Memory,” was taken back out for him to play during the performance.
Presented in support of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibition "Dierks Bentley: Every Mile a Memory" (March 4, 2016, through September 6, 2016).
