Doug Sahm (1941-1999) was a standard bearer for Tex-Mex music and a contemporary and friend of country’s Outlaw movement. During this September 14, 2019, program, marking twenty years since Doug Sahm’s passing, his son Shawn Sahm joins a panel discussion and leads a rousing tribute concert at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Guest vocalists include Rodney Crowell, Delbert McClinton, and Kelly Willis.

The conversation coincides with the Museum’s major exhibition “Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s.” Panelists include poster artist Kerry Awn, author and former music critic Bill Bentley, and guitarist Charlie Sexton. The Museum’s Michael Gray serves as moderator.

One of the most versatile musicians in Austin in the sixties and seventies, Sahm may be considered “the father of Americana music,” Bentley says. Sahm blended Tex-Mex, rock, blues, and country into a potent musical mixture across his work with the Sir Douglas Quintet, the Texas Tornados, and various solo projects.

The panelists share stories about Sahm’s Telecaster guitars, his passion for baseball, and his fondness for “groovin’.” The tribute concert after the panel explores the breadth of Sahm’s recorded catalog. The house band includes Shawn Sahm (guitar and vocal), John Jorgenson (keyboards), Charlie Sexton (guitar), Bobby Flores (fiddle), Michael Guerra (accordion), Neal Walker (bass), and Freddy “Steady” Krc (drums).

The concert set list includes: “Texas Tornado” (sung by Shawn Sahm), “Who Were You Thinking Of?” (sung by Shawn Sahm), “Wildflower” (written by Bob Dylan, sung by Kimmie Rhodes), “The Rains Came” (sung by John Jorgenson), “Be Real” (sung by Kelly Willis), “Mendocino” (sung by Charlie Sexton), “Adios Mexico” (sung by Tom Kenny), “At the Crossroads” (sung by Tami Neilson), “Texas Me” (sung by Delbert McClinton), “(Is Anybody Going To) San Antone” (sung by Rodney Crowell), and “She’s About a Mover” (sung by multiple guests).
