Grammy-winning songwriter Liz Rose—Taylor Swift's go-to co-writer for such early hits as "Tim McGraw," "White Horse," and "You Belong with Me"—recounts her unlikely career journey for the Poets and Prophets series at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
During this interview and performance, taped January 19, 2019, Rose talks about growing up in Irving, Texas, with no musical background, and moving to Nashville as the wife of a songwriter. Eventually, she found work as a song plugger and began her own music publishing company. After dropping in on songwriting sessions and informally pitching in, she started to think she could write songs too.
That path led to her hit-producing writing partnership with Swift, a topic Rose also digs into here, in addition to performing a medley of Swift hits and songs from her own 2017 album, "Swimming Alone."
Rose has also written for artists including Kenny Chesney, Bonnie Raitt, and Carrie Underwood, and collaborates with fellow songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Lori McKenna as the "Love Junkies," who’ve composed such hits as Little Big Town's "Girl Crush" and Underwood's "Cry Pretty" together. Lindsey joins Rose on stage during the program to sing "Girl Crush."
