Luke Dick performs and tells stories about three of the hits he’s co-written: Dierks Bentley’s “Burning Man,” Eric Church’s “Kill a Word,” and Miranda Lambert’s “Bluebird.” He also shares two songs from a documentary he produced about his mother.
In a virtual interview with the Museum’s Michael McCall on February 20, 2021, the Oklahoma native remembers his first attempt to break into the Nashville music community as a recording artist. After finding little interest from labels, he pursued a Ph.D. in philosophy and taught college in New York City. Then as a new generation of country artists began to emerge, music publishers beckoned him to return to Nashville as a songwriting collaborator. Dick says his journey might be considered “a real overnight success story of twenty years.”
Dick personalizes the performance portion of the program by not only singing three of his most popular compositions, but also two songs about his mother. “Polyester” and “Dance Like Me” are from the award-winning documentary “Red Dog,” which recounts his mother’s experience of working in a topless bar in Oklahoma City.
