During a panel discussion about letterpress printing, graphic artists and designers share their early experiences in the field, their involvement with the community, and their advice for aspiring printmakers.
The May 27, 2017, panel is led by Hatch Show Print’s Celene Aubry, with assistance from documentary filmmaker Erin Beckloff (“Pressing On: The Letterpress Film”). Panelists include: Katherine Fries, an artist, teacher, and painter; David Wolske, a letterpress artist and instructor; Tammy Winn and Adam Winn, founders of The Red Door Press; Brad Vetter, a letterpress printer and graphic designer; and Mary Sullivan, owner of Crowing Hens Bindery.
Photographs of the panelists’ work are shown throughout the program, underscoring the variety of artistic expression that letterpress printing can provide. Near the end of the discussion, the panelists answer questions from the audience about 3D letter blocks, casting type, cylinder presses, and the purchasing of presses.
