The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater hosts a screening of the documentary “The Palomino,” which chronicles the story of the club from its earliest days until its closure in 1995. Tony Booth, Rosie Flores, James Intveld, and country music historian Scott B. Bomar joined the filmmakers and the Museum’s Erin Osmon for a conversation about the making of the film and the Palomino’s significance and legacy. This program was recorded on April 25, 2026.
During the program, the four panelists discuss what first attracted them to the Palomino and how they were involved with the venue over the years. Booth shares stories from his time as the Palomino’s bandleader, while Bomar reflects on notable musicians who got their start there. Flores and Intveld recall beginning their own Palomino stories by entering the venue’s Tuesday night talent contests. To conclude the program, Flores and Intveld perform “Cryin’ Over You,” written by Intveld.
The Palomino was once country music’s most important venue on the West Coast. Located in the North Hollywood neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, its modest stage hosted numerous country music icons—including Country Music Hall of Fame members Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, the Everly Brothers, Willie Nelson, and Hank Williams—in the 1950s and ’60s. In later years, the club served as an incubator for the Los Angeles “cowpunk” scene and future stars Flores, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, and Dwight Yoakam.
