1h 11m
Oh Boy Records President Fiona Whelan Prine, Oh Boy Records Director of Operations Jody Whelan, current Oh Boy Records artist Emily Scott Robinson, and former Oh Boy Records artist R. B. Morris discuss the past, present, and future of the independent record label, founded by John Prine, his manager and business partner Al Bunetta, and their associate Dan Einstein in 1981. The label has released recordings by Prine, Todd Snider, Kelsey Waldon, and other artists signed to the label, as well as compilations of classic country songs by Roy Acuff, Lorrie Morgan, Conway Twitty, and others.
Fiona Whelan Prine (John Prine’s wife) and Jody Whelan (John and Fiona’s oldest son), also discuss how Prine’s compassion and sense of community have continued to drive Oh Boy Records since his death in 2020. Morris performs his original song “Roy” and Prine’s song “He Was in Heaven Before He Died,” while Robinson performs an original song inspired by Prine, “Cheap Seats,” and a cover of Prine’s “Unwed Fathers.”
This program was recorded on October 9, 2022, and presented in support of the festival “You Got Gold: Celebrating the Life & Songs of John Prine.”|
