Musician, producer, singer, and songwriter Buddy Miller joins the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to share songs and stories from throughout his career. This program was recorded on July 27, 2025, as part of the Museum’s weekly Musician Spotlight series, which highlights touring and recording musicians in Americana, bluegrass, and country music and beyond.
Throughout the program, Miller retraces the steps of his musical journey, as he moved from one major music hub to another and met some of his closest collaborators along the way. He describes playing for Country Music Hall of Fame member Emmylou Harris, a gig that led to producing Robert Plant, which resulted in lengthy working relationships with producer T Bone Burnett and his wife, screenwriter and director Callie Khouri.
Joined by Chris Donohue on bass, Austin Hoke on cello, and Regina McCrary of the McCrary Sisters on background vocals, Miller weaves in compositions written by himself and his wife and musical partner, Julie Miller, including “Gasoline and Matches,” “All My Tears”—from Harris’s “Wrecking Ball” album—and “Don’t Tell Me,” recorded by Lee Ann Womack. He also answers questions from the audience about his experiences at Los Angeles’s famous Palomino Club and how he found his beloved and rare Wandre guitars. The quartet closes out the program with a stirring performance of Miller’s “Somewhere Trouble Don’t Go.”
Miller has produced or co-produced albums for Solomon Burke, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Devil Makes Three, Patty Griffin, Jim Lauderdale, the McCrary Sisters, Allison Moorer, Ralph Stanley, Robert Plant’s Band of Joy, Richard Thompson, the War and Treaty, and the Wood Brothers. He has also released more than a dozen albums on his own and with his wife. Additionally, Miller served as executive music producer for multiple seasons of the hit television show “Nashville.” Since 2005, he has led the Americana All-Star Band, which backs performances at the Americana Music Association’s annual Americana Honors & Awards ceremony. Miller is the most-awarded artist in Americana Music Association history and, in 2022, received a lifetime achievement award from the organization. Alongside Lauderdale, he co-hosts “The Buddy & Jim Radio Show” on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country channel.
