Chuck Mead and guests Suzy Bogguss, James Burton, Cam, Deke Dickerson, and Caitlin Rose perform vintage songs showcasing the Bakersfield Sound, with selections made famous by Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and others.
The concert, held December 13, 2014, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, is presented in support of the exhibition “The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and California Country” (March 24, 2012, through December 31, 2014).
Chuck Mead & the Grassy Knoll Boys kick off the show performing three songs from Buck Owens’s catalog: “Close Up the Honky Tonks,” “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail,” and “I Don’t Hear You.” In homage to Wynn Stewart, they perform “Playboy” and “Big, Big Love.” Cam sings Owens’s “Cryin’ Time” and Haggard’s “Okie From Muskogee,” followed by Mead’s rendition of Owens’s “Hello Trouble.”
Caitlin Rose joins Mead’s ensemble for “A Dear John Letter” (a hit for Jean Shepard and Ferlin Husky), “Little Pink Mack” (recorded by Kay Adams), and “Wishful Thinking” (recorded by Wynn Stewart). Cam returns to harmonize with Rose on Susan Raye’s hit “L.A. International Airport.”
Chuck Mead sings Buck Owens’s “Above and Beyond” before introducing guitarist Deke Dickerson, who performs Joe and Rose Lee Maphis’s “Dim Lights, Thick Smoke, and Loud, Loud Music,” Billy Mize’s “Who’ll Buy the Wine,” and Tommy Collins’s “I Always Get a Souvenir.”
After Mead sings “My Heart Skips a Beat,” he introduces Suzy Bogguss and guitarist Chris Scruggs, who perform Haggard’s “Today I Started Loving You Again” and “Let’s Chase Each Other Around the Room.” At the end of the program, Burton supports Mead on Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man Blues,” “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive,” and “Mama Tried.”
The cast closes the event with a finale of Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down.”
The Grassy Knoll Boys lineup includes Carco Clave on steel guitar, Martin Lynds on drums, Mark Miller on bass, and Renae Truex on fiddle.
