Margo Price gathers musical comrades including Lilly Hiatt, Erin Rae, and Aaron Lee Tasjan for a morning of collaborations and conversations at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. As host, NPR’s Ann Powers introduces Price as “the Americana music breakthrough of 2016.”
During this performance, held on September 21, 2016, in conjunction with AmericanaFest, Price sings multiple cuts from her debut solo album, “Midwest Farmer’s Daughter.” Along with Hiatt, Rae, and Tasjan, other special guests include Jeremy Ivey, country songwriter Bobby Fischer (her great uncle), Darrin Bradbury, Kenny Vaughan, and producer Matt Ross-Spang.
Price recounts the experience of browsing free publications such as the “Nashville Scene” and “All the Rage” when she moved from small-town Illinois to Nashville in 2003. “In there,” she says, “it had all the show listings, and I would sit and look at all the cool things people were doing and wonder how I was going to fit my name into that paper.” Price says she realized she needed to improve her songwriting, playing, and stage banter after hanging out with the older songwriters who frequented the Hall of Fame Lounge, a low-key hotel bar located near Music Row.
Songs performed (often with her band, the Price Tags) include: “Hands of Time,” “About to Find Out” (with Ivey), “I Lost It” (a Lucinda Williams cover with Hiatt), “Weekender,” “Since You Put Me Down” (with Rae), “Clean Slate” (with Rae and Hiatt), “Hard Life” (Tasjan), “Life Is Hard” (with Bradbury and Ivey), “Hurtin’ on the Bottle” (with Vaughan),” and “Four Years of Choices” (with Ross-Spang).
