Steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar performs live and shares stories from her life and career on May 14, 2022, as part of the Museum's Nashville Cats series, which spotlights musicians who have made significant contributions to country music.
During the program, Cashdollar talks about her life and career, working with artists such as Asleep at the Wheel, Bob Dylan, Leon Redbone, Levon Helm, Ryan Adams, Van Morrison and more. Accompanied by John Hall, Cashdollar performs her song “Waltz for Abilene,” performs her cover of “Foggy Mountain Rock,” and demonstrates different methods of playing steel guitar with excerpts from Bob Wills’s “Steel Guitar Rag,” Hank Williams’s “Hey Good Lookin’,” and Santo and Johnny’s “Sleep Walk.”
Growing up in Woodstock, New York, Cashdollar was exposed to a thriving artistic community. She started playing guitar at age eleven, taking up dobro and playing in various country and bluegrass bands in the coming years—before taking up steel guitar. Shortly after moving to Nashville, she connected with Joe Ely, departing steel guitarist for Asleep at the Wheel. Cashdollar then moved to Austin, Texas to join the band for the next ten years, winning five Grammys in her tenure with the group.
Cashdollar continues to tour and record independently and with other artists from her homebase in Woodstock, New York.
