Shelby Lynne’s body of work is deep and wide. She was only nineteen when she signed her first record deal. During this program—hosted by Lynne’s sister, the Museum’s Allison Moorer—Lynne reflects on her career leading up to her 2024 album, “Consequences of the Crown.” Recorded on September 21, 2024, this program was presented in partnership with the Americana Music Association and celebrates Lynne receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Americana Music Association.
While leading the discussion, Moorer structures the conversation around six attributes that make someone a trailblazer: an ability to think and see differently; a clear sense of purpose; courage to persevere; a belief that obstacles are only challenges; belief in themself; and being able to stand independently, away from the crowd. Supported by photos and short video clips from throughout her childhood and career, Lynne talks about growing up in a musical family in rural Alabama, her friendships with legendary producer Billy Sherrill and Country Music Hall of Fame member Willie Nelson, and how it has been challenging at time to pursue her art. Throughout the program, Lynne treats the audience to acoustic renditions of her songs “Lookin’ Up” and “Regular Man” and an impromptu performance of Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Together, she and Moorer close the program with a performance of “I’ll Hold Your Head.”
A singer, songwriter, musician, and producer, Lynne is widely revered for her unique artistry and her resolutely independent path, upon which she refines her singular brand of Southern soul music. Since beginning her career at the age of nineteen, she has released eighteen studio albums, won the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist award, and received a Grammy for Best New Artist. In 2024, she was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Americana Music Association Honors & Awards.
