Hailing from Manitoba, Canada, singer-songwriter William Prince shares songs he’s written and the stories behind them during 2023’s AmericanaFest. His performance was recorded on September 23, 2023, and presented in partnership with the Americana Music Association.
William Prince has released four studio albums, including 2023’s “Stand in the Joy.” During the program, Prince notes the contributions of producer Dave Cobb and pedal steel player Paul Franklin to this record before performing songs included on it: “Broken Heart of Mine,” “Peace of Mind,” and “When You Miss Someone.”
Prince performs other notable songs from his catalog including “Always Have What We Had,” as well as his breakout single, “Breathless,” and “The Carny,” both from his 2015 debut album “Earthly Days.” As a member of Peguis First Nation, Prince addresses the struggle of pursuing a music career as an indigenous North American and expresses his gratitude for being in Nashville, where so much of the music he was influenced by was created.
Prince was nominated for Emerging Act of the Year at the 2023 Americana Honors & Awards, received the 2020 SOCAN Songwriting Prize for his song “The Spark,” and has won awards from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Junos) and the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
