Grammy-winning fiddle player, vocalist, and songwriter Tammy Rogers performs two songs and talks about her wide-ranging career as a studio and road musician and as a recording artist in an interview with the Museum’s Peter Cooper. An important contributor to country and bluegrass recordings since the early 1980s, Rogers has played on sessions for Eric Church, Kim Carnes, Jim Lauderdale, Todd Snider, Buddy Miller, and many others.
Rogers grew up in Texas, moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University, and soon after graduating, successfully auditioned for a place in Patty Loveless’s touring band. Later she played in Reba McEntire’s band. In the mid-1990s, Rogers cofounded Dead Reckoning, an independent record label and Nashville recording artists’ collective with Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch, Mike Henderson, and Harry Stinson.
In the mid-2000s, she began playing Nashville’s Station Inn with the SteelDrivers, a group whose lead singer was a then-unknown Chris Stapleton. Stapleton went on to country stardom as a solo act, but not before earning Grammy nominations in the bluegrass category. After Stapleton’s exit, the SteelDrivers won a Grammy for “The Muscle Shoals Sessions.”
In the interview, Rogers talks about all of these parts of her musical history, details the differences between making music for others in the studio and onstage, and making music (and writing songs) with the SteelDrivers. She also talks emotionally about Ann Soyars, the spitfire who worked the front door for many years at the Station Inn and who was an early supporter of youngsters Stapleton and Dierks Bentley. Rogers bookends the interview with solo performances of “McEntire’s Rain” and “I Choose You.”
