Angaleena Presley performs songs from her second album, “Wrangled,” and original material recorded by Pistol Annies (the dynamic ensemble that also includes Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe) during this Songwriter Session, held June 3, 2017 at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Early in the program, Presley points out that she has a “bit of an honesty problem.” The Kentucky native’s unfiltered point of view lends itself well to pointed songs such as “Bless My Heart,” “American Middle Class,” “Knocked Up,” “Housewife’s Prayer,” “Lemon Drop,” “Pain Pills,” and “Wrangled.”
Taking audience questions, she remembers her first guitars and offers a long list of influences ranging from Janis Joplin and Carole King (her mother’s favorites), Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson (her father’s preferences), and the Everly Brothers and Indigo Girls (which she says she discovered on her own).
Angaleena Presley tells the crowd, “To me, good music is if I feel something. If it makes me dance, if it makes me happy, if it makes me sad, if it makes me angry. A good song moves me in some way, whether it be physically or mentally. So, I don’t really put limits on it. I like about anything—if it’s good.”
