During a special 2020 Veterans Day Songwriter Session at the Museum, songwriter and Operation Song founder Bob Regan shares the stage with OS program director Mike Byer to perform a selection of songs, and discuss their organization, its purpose, and process. Operation Song pairs professional songwriters with veterans, active-duty military, and their families to help them share their experiences through songs.
During the Songwriter Session, Bob Regan performs his hit songs “Thinkin’ About You” (recorded by Trisha Yearwood) and “Your Everything” (Keith Urban). He also sings “Together as One,” a song he wrote with a World War II veteran and Operation Song participant.
Mike Byer candidly discusses the struggles of dealing with his medical retirement from the military after a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, and how learning to play the guitar helped him through it. He shares that his retirement coinciding with his son entering the military was the inspiration behind the song “Over the Wire,” co-written with professional writers Marc Beeson and Travis Meadows as part of the Operation Song program. He also performs “Stories,” a song inspired by having his granddaughter live with him while his son was deployed.
