Bluegrass performers Dailey & Vincent—named for founding members Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent—share a mix of time-honored country and gospel songs to highlight the tradition of gospel quartet singing during this 2017 Musician Spotlight at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Along with band members Aaron McCune and Jeff Parker, Dailey and Vincent open the show performing standards from Country Music Hall of Fame members the Statler Brothers, including “Susan When She Tried” (written by Don Reid), “My Only Love” (written by Jimmy Fortune), and “Class of ’57” (written by Don and Harold Reid). The group also performs “Too Much on My Heart” (written by Fortune).
Through gospel classics “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” and “Wonderful Grace of Jesus,” the quartet displays finely honed four-part harmonies.
Citing Country Music Hall of Fame members the Louvin Brothers as an influence, Dailey & Vincent perform the Louvins’ song “When I Stop Dreaming.” McCune’s bass vocals are featured in the quartet’s performance of “The Way I Am,” originally recorded by Merle Haggard.
Dailey & Vincent also joke with the audience and answer questions about McCune’s bass vocals, singing harmony, the Grand Ole Opry, Father of Bluegrass/Country Music Hall of Fame member Bill Monroe, and the direction of country music.
