Jamie Floyd performs and shares the highs and lows of her songwriting career during a 2018 Songwriter Session at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Fresh from her first nationally televised appearance on the USA Network’s singing competition show “Real Country,” Floyd sings “The Blade,” which she also performed on the show. She wrote the song with Marc Beeson and Allen Shamblin, and Ashley Monroe recorded it as the title track of her 2015 album.
Around the writing of “The Blade,” Floyd was offered a last-minute opportunity to write a song for the Dolly Parton film “A Country Christmas Story.” The songwriter remembers getting off from her restaurant job at midnight, reading the script, writing and recording the song, and submitting it—all by morning. That resulted in a request for another song, which she also delivered in under twenty-four hours. Brian McKnight performed that second song, “Trouble Get Me Off Your Mind,” in the film, and Floyd performs it live here, along with “Mississippi Flood,” which she calls her “fake #1 song” (it was featured in the television show “Nashville,” as a hit for country-star character Juliette Barnes).
Floyd opens up about how her accomplishments have coincided with hurdles, and remembers the release of “The Last Movie Star”—actor Burt Reynolds’s final film, with a soundtrack provided by Floyd’s duo Stranger Friends. The same week, she was dropped from her publishing deal and back working as a waitress. Floyd performs soundtrack cuts “Yet to Come” (which she says helped her through that difficult time) and “Stuck,” and follows with “What I See in Me,” a song she wrote to encourage herself.
