During a Musician Spotlight at the Museum, Justin Moses shows his skillful playing on mandolin, guitar, and Dobro, and brings out his wife, fellow multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull, for more music and audience questions. Both Moses and Hull were recognized in the Museum’s annual exhibition “American Currents: State of the Music” for 2018, which opened shortly before the program, held April 14, 2019.
Moses looks back on his childhood interest in stringed instruments and performs a mix of original instruments and classic songs that influenced him. Selections include traditional tunes such as “Boil Them Cabbage Down,” “Turkey in the Straw,” and “Old Joe Clark,” alongside renditions of “The Wildwood Flower” and “I Saw the Light.” On Dobro, he performs songs from his “Beyond Measure: The EP,” as well as the bluegrass standard “Road to Columbus.”
Together, Moses and Hull pay tribute to the Stanley Brothers with performances of “Bound to Ride” and “O Death.” Hull explains how she discovered the mandolin as a child and the couple performs one of her instrumental originals, “Windy Hill.” Moses says that when inspiration strikes to write a song, he often uses whatever instrument he happens to be holding.
Later, Tennessee natives Moses and Hull talk about the wide variety of bluegrass festivals, their bluegrass influences, and their desire to explore other music beyond bluegrass. Moses was awarded the 2018 Dobro Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. That same year, Hull was named Mandolin Player of the Year.
