In this one-man show, John Lomax III discusses the Lomax family’s legacy and performs some of the most influential American roots-music songs that his relatives have collected and preserved. Performing a cappella, Lomax takes the audience on a generational journey, from cowboy songs such as “The Buffalo Skinners,” “The Streets of Laredo,” and “Home on the Range,” through Leadbelly’s “Midnight Special” and “Goodnight, Irene,” to the Beach Boys’ rendition of “Sloop John B.” and Johnny Cash’s version of “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream.”
For four generations, the Lomax family has collected, promoted, and performed American roots music. John A. Lomax collected and helped popularize cowboy and western songs more than a century ago. His children—Alan, John Jr., and Bess—also became renowned folksong collectors and performers. John Lomax III and his cousins have continued the tradition. For their pioneering cultural work, the Lomaxes have been hailed as “The First Family of American Roots Music.”
