Multi-instrumentalist J.D. Wilkes, best known as the front man of American roots band the Legendary Shack Shakers, performs and tells stories about his life in this edition of the Museum’s Musician Spotlight series.
Texas native Wilkes formed the Shack Shakers in Kentucky in the mid-1990s, and has earned critical acclaim as a visual artist, filmmaker, and the author of two books, including “Barn Dances and Jamborees Across Kentucky.” He released his first solo album, “Fire Dream,” in 2018.
Over the years, J.D. Wilkes’s collaborators have included the Black Keys, John Carter Cash, Shemekia Copeland, Merle Haggard, Wanda Jackson, Shooter Jennings, Robert Plant, and Sturgill Simpson.
For the one-hour program, Wilkes performs ten songs on both harmonica and banjo, including selections from his solo album. Responding to audience questions, He also demonstrates different styles of play on the banjo, offers insight into the harmonica, and describes the significance of being an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
