Songwriter and mandolin player Sierra Hull performs live and shares insight into her instrument and her influences during a 2017 Musician Spotlight at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
A multi-year International Bluegrass Music Association Mandolin Player of the Year winner, Hull performs a mix of her own songs (“Weighted Mind,” “Lullaby”), traditional tunes (“Queen of Hearts,” “Cattle in the Cane”), classic country (Loretta Lynn’s “You Wanna Give Me a Lift,” which Hull also performed as part of a pre-Grammy tribute performance), and even a part of the Prince song “1999,” which Hull says she sometimes works into her sets. Her husband, well-known bluegrass musician Justin Moses, joins Hull on stage.
Hull talks to the crowd about coming to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in the past and being drawn to Country Music Hall of Fame member Bill Monroe’s 1923 Gibson F-5 mandolin, housed in the Museum’s “Precious Jewel” exhibit. She also notes her gospel music influence, and how much of it came via her bluegrass hero, Monroe.
Together, Sierra Hull and Justin Moses close out the program with a Bill Monroe instrumental.
