Joey Miskulin—considered among the all-time great accordion players—discusses his career as a polka band member, studio player, and member of the Grammy-winning cowboy band Riders in the Sky during this April 14, 2018, program, part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Nashville Cats series.
A Chicago native who began playing professionally at age twelve, Miskulin spent his formative years playing in Frankie Yankovic’s polka band. After his talents were introduced to famed Nashville producer “Cowboy” Jack Clement, Miskulin soon carved out a career in studio work on recordings by such varied artists as Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Johnny Cash, U2, Paul McCartney, and Alan Jackson.
Perhaps most famously, Miskulin is one-fourth of Riders in the Sky, the cowboy quartet that earned Grammy Awards for its “Toy Story 2” and “Monsters, Inc.” music.
In an interview with the Museum’s Peter Cooper, Joey Miskulin defines himself as “a musician who plays the accordion, rather than just an accordionist,” and recounts many of his career highlights.
Miskulin also joins three other top studio musicians to play a cut from his 2014 jazz album, “The Other Side of the Fence,” and Riders in the Sky take the Ford Theater stage to perform two songs, including “Lights of Old Santa Fe.”
