Ashley Monroe performs songs from her 2018 album, “Sparrow,” and talks about the record with Tyler Mahan Coe, host of country music podcast “Cocaine & Rhinestones,” during a Songwriter Session at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Among the songs Ashley Monroe performs: love song “Hands on You”; “She Wakes Me Up,” inspired by her dog Betty; and “Paying Attention” and “Wild Love,” co-written with Brendan Benson and Waylon Payne. Monroe also candidly discusses the death of her parents, which inspired her songs “Mother’s Daughter,” and “Daddy I Told You.”
Monroe, who was pregnant through the making of “Sparrow,” discusses the parallels between giving birth and making a record, and how pregnancy made her feel stronger and more confident while making the album. She also points to how having her son changed the way she sees the world and sparked her creativity.
The singer-songwriter shares some of her songwriting influences, which range from Dolly Parton to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and prompted by host Tyler Mahan Coe, offers her personal take on what country music is.
