Deke Dickerson a virtuosic guitar player, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and author—leads this 2019 program on California country music, performing songs that include “California on My Mind,” “Hello Trouble,” and “Hubbin’ It,” while also telling stories about Country Music Hall of Fame members Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Bob Wills, and others.
Dickerson is accompanied by guitarist Eugene Moles, who hails from Bakersfield, California, and started playing with Merle Haggard when he was eighteen years old, regularly recording songs that typify the Bakersfield sound. Moles discusses sitting in on a session with Buck Owens and the Buckaroos in Bakersfield, before Dickerson and Moles perform “Hello Trouble,” as well as Country Music Hall of Fame member Roger Miller’s “In The Summertime.”
Deke Dickerson tells stories about Bob Wills and the genre of western swing, performing “Hubbin’ It,” which was recorded by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys and written by Country Music Hall of Fame member Cindy Walker. Canadian rockabilly star Bloodshot Bill also joins Dickerson and Moles to perform “Shuckin’ My Way to the Hall of Fame.”
