Eddie Stubbs hosts a panel discussion memorializing Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and pilot Randy Hughes, fifty years after the plane crash that took their lives.
Panelists for the program, held March 2, 2013, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, include Cline’s widower, Charlie Dick; Hughes’s widow and Copas’s daughter, Kathy Copas Hughes; Hawkins’s former fiddler, Earl White; and Bobby Wright, whose uncle, entertainer Jack Anglin, died in a car accident on the day of the funeral.
Kathy Copas Hughes remembers watching her father and Hawkins play with a child’s gyroscope the morning they departed for a Kansas City concert benefiting the family of deceased radio DJ “Cactus” Jack Call. She also recalls that she learned of their deaths, and the death of her husband, from a newscast the next morning.
Although Hawkins’s widow, Country Music Hall of Fame member Jean Shepard, couldn’t attend the program, Stubbs brings along audio excerpts from a previous interview, in which she remembers Hawkins as a “man’s man” who loved to hunt and fish. In the clips, she recalls that a fan club member awoke her on the night of the crash with the news.
Charlie Dick recalls Patsy Cline’s voracious appetite for recorded music. “She had records of everybody you could think of,” he says, “and they was on all the time . . . whether you liked it or not.” Stubbs calls Cline “one of the greatest voices, not just of her time, but of all time.”
