Songwriters Luke Laird and Jeremy Spillman share songs they have written with Eric Church and the stories behind them. This live performance was recorded on July 15, 2023, and offered in support of the exhibition “Eric Church: Country Heart, Restless Soul,” presented by Gibson.
During the program, Luke Laird performs the chart-toppers he co-wrote with Eric Church: “Talladega,” “Drink in My Hand,” and “Give Me Back My Hometown.” He also performs “Quittin’ Time,” a song co-written with Church and Josh Thompson but recorded by Morgan Wallen for “Dangerous: The Double Album.” Jeremy Spillman performs songs he co-wrote with Church: “Country Music Jesus,” “Bad Mother Trucker,” “A Man Who Was Gonna Die Young,” and “Sinners Like Me,” the title track to Church’s debut studio album.
Laird has written songs for many other artists including Carrie Underwood’s “Undo It,” Kenny Chesney’s “American Kids,” Jon Pardi’s “Head Over Boots,” and Little Big Town’s “Pontoon.” In addition to the songs performed during the show, Spillman co-wrote Church’s “Hell on the Heart,” “Before She Does,” “Lotta Boot Left to Fill,” and “The Snake.” He also wrote Trace Adkins’s “Arlington” and Lee Ann Womack’s “He Oughta Know That by Now.”
