During a 2014 Songwriter Session at the Museum, Ashley Monroe performs a mix of songs live, and talks about her solo albums, co-writing hits with Miranda Lambert, forming the Pistol Annies, and more.
Monroe shares a selection of songs from her 2013 album “Like a Rose” (for which she co-wrote all nine tracks), including the title track, co-written with legendary songwriter Guy Clark and Jon Randall; “Two Weeks Late,” co-written with Shane McAnally; and “Weed Instead of Roses,” which co-producer Vince Gill insisted she include.
Monroe also shares memories of an impromptu airstream camping and writing getaway with Miranda Lambert, and how it launched the Pistol Annies—a trio comprised of Ashley Monroe, Miranda Lambert, and Angaleena Presley. Monroe performs one of the songs written on that trip, “Bad Example,” along with Pistol Annies cut “Blues, You’re a Buzzkill,” and “Me and Your Cigarettes,” which was written with Blake Shelton and Lambert and included on Lambert’s 2009 album, “Revolution.”
Other songs Ashley Monroe performs during her Songwriter Session: “I Hope You’re the End of My Story,” a love song inspired by her now-husband and performed by Lambert at their wedding; “Has Anybody Ever Told You” (later included on Monroe’s 2015 album “The Blade”); and “I’m Good at Leavin’,” co-written with Jessi Alexander and Lambert.
A performance of the Miranda Lambert hit “Heart Like Mine”—which Monroe and Lambert wrote together on a trip to see Dollywood and the Smoky Mountains—closes the program.
