Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Braddock discusses his long tenure as a songwriter, with credits ranging from “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” the 1968 #1 hit for Tammy Wynette to “Time Marches On,” Tracy Lawrence’s #1 song nearly thirty years later, as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s “Poets & Prophets” interview series. raps during this interview – and he does! In this candid conversation, CMA, ACM, and Grammy award winner Braddock gives an insider’s view of the challenges and rewards working in Nashville’s music industry.
During this show, Braddock reflects on the highs and lows of his songwriting career and performs “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” the 1980 smash hit for George Jones, often credited as the greatest country song of all time; “The Nerve,” recorded by George Strait; the comedic song “I Lobster but Never Flounder”; “Time Marches On”; and the country rap “I Wanna Talk About Me,” recorded by Toby Keith. Braddock also talks about his role in discovering and producing Blake Shelton. Video clips of Tammy Wynette, George Jones, and iconic award ceremonies illustrate the influence of Braddock as a songwriter, record producer, and author.
A member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, with over 1,200 songs composed and dozens of top ten hits, Braddock broke a lot of rules on his way to the apex of his chosen profession. Born in Auburndale, a tiny town located in rural, pre-Disney Florida, he has also written a couple of memoirs that provide insight into his life and times. “Down in Orbumdale” covers his first twenty-four years and “A Life on Nashville’s Music Row” is a stunning look at the home of country music.
