Crystal Gayle: When I Dream
•
1h 12m
Crystal Gayle shares live songs and talks about her upbringing and career in this 2014 concert and interview at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Gayle reminisces about her mother and father, having a musical family, and meeting her much older and most famous sibling, Loretta Lynn, for the first time when Lynn visited after their father passed away. She remembers getting to perform on the Grand Ole Opry for the first time when she was sixteen (singing the Marty Robbins song “Ribbon of Darkness,” because Lynn was ill), and performs “I’ve Cried (The Blue Right Out of My Eyes),” her debut single, written by Lynn.
Gayle also talks fondly of working with songwriter and producer Allen Reynolds, and performs a medley of songs he wrote for her, including “Wrong Road Again,” “Somebody Loves You,” and “I’ll Get Over You.”
Reflecting upon her many collaborations, Gayle performs her hit Eddie Rabbitt duet “You and I” (with pianist Will Barrow performing Rabbitt’s part), and “The Nearness of You,” from her 1999 album, “Crystal Gayle Sings the Heart & Soul of Hoagy Carmichael.” Gayle also recalls working with Tom Waits on the soundtrack to 1982 Francis Ford Coppola film “One from the Heart,” and performs soundtrack cut “Take Me Home.”
Gayle’s sister Peggy Sue joins her on stage for Loretta Lynn’s signature song, “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” and Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” before Gayle shares some of her biggest hits, including “Talking in Your Sleep,” “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” “Cry,” and “When I Dream.”
Presented in support of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum exhibition “Crystal Gayle: When I Dream” (May 1, 2014, through February 1, 2015).
