Del McCoury Band Plays 'Del and Woody' • Concert, 2016
Special Programs • 49m
The Del McCoury Band performs songs from the 2016 album “Del and Woody”—built on original lyrics by Woody Guthrie, and melodies by McCoury—during a 2016 concert at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, presented during the Americana Music Association’s AmericanaFest conference.
During the concert, McCoury shares the genesis of “Del and Woody”: a request from Woody Guthrie’s daughter, Nora, to put music to her father’s lyrics. She sent him twenty-six songs, many of them written seven decades ago, and McCoury included twelve on the resulting album.
McCoury talks about the enduring relevance and humor in Woody Guthrie’s lyrics, and how well he related to a lot of them, having also grown up in the country. He and the band perform “Dirty Overhalls”—which he explains is how people from the country, like McCoury’s father, pronounced that particular article of clothing—and “Wimmen’s Hats,” again, spelled the way it sounds.
Other songs performed include “Californy Gold,” “Cheap Mike,” “Cornbread and Creek Water,” “Government Roads,” “Left in This World Alone,” and “The New York Trains.” They close the show with “Family Reunion,” a song about appreciating family while they’re still around.
