Delbert McClinton, three-time Grammy winner and a key figure in blues, R&B, country, and Americana music, visits the Ford Theater to talk with the Museum’s Peter Cooper about journeys in music and to sing four songs.

The Lubbock, Texas, native begins the program by talking about his way of getting quiet time alone, or “checking out,” on the bus (if his sunglasses are on, “Delbert Is Out,” and if the sunglasses are off, “Delbert Is In”), and by recalling his youth in Lubbock: “It’s so flat that if you look real hard you can see the back of your head. It’s a good place to ride a bike.”

McClinton goes on to tell stories about falling in love with the harmonica upon hearing Jimmy Reed; about his “teaching” John Lennon to play harmonica in 1961; about writing “Two More Bottles of Wine,” which would go on to be a chart-topping country single for Emmylou Harris; and the way a writer knows when they’ve created something fine (“Because it makes you feel better than you were feeling”).

With Kevin McKendree on piano and James Pennebaker on guitar, Delbert McClinton also performs “Two More Bottles of Wine,” the John Hiatt-penned “Have a Little Faith in Me,” “If I Hock My Guitar,” and “A Fool Like Me.”
