Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and founding Carolina Chocolate Drops member Dom Flemons—whose 2018 solo album, "Black Cowboys" earned a Grammy nomination and Blues Music Award—takes the stage at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's CMA Theater for a Musician Spotlight.
Over the course of the hour-long program, Flemons sings and plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, and rhythm bones, performing traditional songs that have inspired him and the original compositions that resulted, and sharing the stories and history behind both.
Among the songs Dom Flemons chooses to spotlight and perform: "My Long Journey Home," released in 1936 by the Monroe Brothers ("Father of Bluegrass" Bill Monroe and his brother Charlie"); "There's A Brown Skin Girl Down The Road Somewhere," recorded by country fiddle pioneer Eck Robertson in 1929, and adapted by Flemons in the style of harmonica great and Country Music Hall of Fame member DeFord Bailey; and "Cindy Gal," a traditional number he learned from old-time fiddler Joe Thompson, who significantly influenced Flemons's former band the Carolina Chocolate Drops. (The Carolina Chocolate Drops also included a version of "Cindy Gal" on the band's 2010 album, "Genuine Negro Jig.")
Flemons also performs songs he selected, adapted, or wrote for his "Dom Flemons Presents Black Cowboys" album, including field holler "Black Woman," which folklorist John A. Lomax collected in the 1930s; "He’s a Lone Ranger," a tribute to Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves; "Steel Pony Blues," written about ranger and railroad porter Nat Love; and cowboy song "Goodbye Old Paint," also collected by Lomax, via fiddler Jess Morris.
