Jamey Johnson highlights Willie Nelson’s influence and individuality within Outlaw country music and country music as a whole, noting his place among a list of the genre’s stalwarts, including Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Waylon Jennings.
“He’s part prophet but he’s also a wizard,” Johnson says of Country Music Hall of Fame member Nelson.
Jamey Johnson also recalls getting to know Willie Nelson over the years and learning from the singer-songwriter that there was no significance to any particular style of music within the country music genre, whether it was in the “norm” or against the mainstream. To Willie, Johnson says, “There was room for everything. There’s especially room for him. And that’s influenced me the most.”
