Multi-instrumentalist Molly Tuttle—the first woman to win the International Bluegrass Association’s guitar player of the year—performs a selection of original music and classic songs during a Musician Spotlight at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, held April 8, 2018.
Growing up in California with a father who taught guitar, Tuttle started on the instrument at age eight. By high school, she was performing in her family bluegrass band with aspirations of also becoming a singer-songwriter. After studying guitar at the Berklee College of Music and connecting with Boston’s bluegrass scene, Tuttle moved to Nashville to start her music career.
Known for both flatpicking and clawhammer play, she earned the top guitar honor from the International Bluegrass Association in 2017, and won it again in 2018, the same year the Americana Music Association also named her instrumentalist of the year.
During the program, Molly Tuttle sings and shows off her virtuoso guitar skills on nine songs, including six she wrote or co-wrote, and answers audience questions about her upbringing, schooling, and life as a professional artist.
Other highlights include her performances of John Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind” and Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues.”
