Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s
•
1h 30m
The filmmakers behind a six-part documentary series titled “They Called Us Outlaws” speak about their interviews and inspirations for the ambitious project. Panelists Eric Geadelmann, Kelly Magelky, and Jack Ingram share the stage at the Museum on May 25, 2018, to coincide with the opening of the major exhibit “Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ’70s.”
In addition to directing and co-producing the six films, Geadelmann counts among the co-curators of “Outlaws & Armadillos.” Magelky serves as a co-producer and editor of the films, while Ingram narrates. The panelists tell the Museum’s Michael Gray about the early stages of creating “They Called Us Outlaws,” the influence of Waylon Jennings, and the experience of interviewing icons of the era such as Guy Clark, Jessi Colter, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson.
Geadelmann, who is based in Austin, Texas, also outlines the series in its six parts, with brief previews of each segment screened during the panel.
In addition to narrating, Ingram interviewed numerous artists for the documentaries. “What really struck me, doing these interviews with my heroes, is the Outlaw movement and the era was a moment in time,” he says. “. . . I always thought, ‘Oh, we can keep swinging away and keep doing it,’ but when I was interviewing these guys, I realized very quickly that what they’re saying, that’s my inner voice. They’re saying things that I know are true and the whole idea of ‘being successful’ went away. . . . The heart of the matter is that you find your voice and speak your truth, and you make it rhyme and sing a song.”
