Rosanne Cash • Interview and Performance • 2025
1h 25m
Four-time Grammy-winning artist and songwriter Rosanne Cash joins the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for a one-on-one interview with Museum writer-editor RJ Smith and an intimate performance, accompanied by John Leventhal, her partner and frequent collaborator. This program was offered in support of the exhibition “Rosanne Cash: Time Is a Mirror” and recorded on January 26, 2025.
During this program, Cash speaks of her early inspiration from and admiration for three defiantly courageous and unique women: Patsy Cline, Judy Garland, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She also discusses touring with her father, Johnny Cash, at the age of 18; her approach and dedication to her craft; and writing songs for both a new album and a forthcoming musical based on the 1979 Sally Field film “Norma Rae.” Following an engaging Q&A with the audience, the program concludes with striking performances of “The Sunken Lands,” “A Feather’s Not a Bird,” “Blue Moon with Heartache,” “Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow,” “Long Black Veil,” and “Seven Year Ache.”
Beginning in the 1970s and continuing to the present day, Cash has staked out a distinctive place in American music. Her songs have drawn on rockabilly rhythms, the truth-telling of folk-rock songwriters, West Coast country-rock energy, new wave flash, and deeply rooted country music. Cash’s hits include “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me,” “I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party,” “It Hasn’t Happened Yet,” “Tennessee Flat Top Box, “No Memories Hangin’ Round,” and “Never Be You,” among others. Throughout her career, she has maintained an unwavering artistic spirit and vision. In 2021, Cash became the first female composer to receive the MacDowell Medal, awarded since 1960 to an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to American culture.
