Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer discuss and perform songs from their collaborative album “Not Dark Yet” in this 2017 program, hosted by NPR music critic Ann Powers. The conversation delves into the song selections for the record and the process of creating arrangements that highlight their harmonies, as well as music’s important and pervasive presence during the singers, songwriters, and sisters' southern Alabama upbringing.

“The theme of this record is our relationship and how we rely on each other musically and otherwise,” says Moorer, who first performed in public with Lynne at the local fiddlers’ convention when they weren’t yet eight years old.

Lynne describes the “cosmic connection” that allows the sibling singers to instinctively match each other’s vocal phrasing, improvise harmonies, and communicate complicated musical arrangement ideas with only a subtle look or gesture.

Lynne and Moorer convey that connection in performances of “Looking for Blue Eyes” (a Moorer favorite since childhood, originally recorded by Jessi Colter) and Bob Dylan’s “Not Dark Yet.”

The two also explain how the devotion inherent in Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms,” “My List” by the Killers, and Nirvana’s “Lithium” relate to their relationship, and why those songs were important to include on the project.
