Shy Carter explains how he found common ground in the storytelling of R&B, soul, and country music, and performs hits he’s written for Kane Brown, Billy Currington, Sugarland, and pop star Charlie Puth during this Songwriter Session, recorded March 9, 2019, at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Blake Anthony “Shy” Carter grew up in Memphis, then moved to Michigan as a teenager with his family. He used songwriting as a way to cope with the new environment, then chased his musical ambitions to Los Angeles after high school. Early on, he attracted attention from pop artists Nelly and Rob Thomas, then made connections to carve out a spot in country music, too. During his banter with the audience, Carter says, “Probably people write songs because they’ve been through something. Maybe I’ve been through something, and then I’ve got a lot of emotions, so writing songs helps me get ’em out.”
The set list includes: “Speak to a Girl” (recorded by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill), “Stuck Like Glue” (recorded by Sugarland), “Good as You” (recorded by Kane Brown), “My Heart, Your Hands” (a new song), “It Don’t Hurt Like It Used To” (recorded by Billy Currington), “Heaven” (recorded by Kane Brown) and “One Call Away” (recorded by Charlie Puth).
