1h 9m
Pedal steel players Dan Dugmore, Steve Fishell, JayDee Maness, and Al Perkins, all influential musicians in the Los Angeles country-rock scene, join this panel discussion. This program was recorded on October 2, 2022, and is presented in support of the exhibition “Western Edge: The Roots and Reverberations of Los Angeles Country-Rock,” presented by City National Bank.
Steve Fishell leads this conversation with Maness, Perkins, and Dugmore about their careers, interspersed with archival video and audio clips. Maness recounts what it was like recording with the Byrds, his time playing at the Palomino Club in Los Angeles, and being influenced by steel guitar players like Buddy Emmons and Lloyd Green. Perkins remembers learning to play steel guitar as a kid, first joining the Flying Burrito Brothers, and being influenced by Buck Owens’s and Rick Nelson’s steel player, Tom Brumley. Dugmore talks about how he joined Linda Ronstadt’s band, recalls his excitement at having the opportunity to record with Richie Furay, and cites Sneaky Pete Kleinow, steel guitar player for the Flying Burrito Brothers, as a major influence. Fishell talks about the influence of Rusty Young, steel guitar player for the band Poco, and the impression Young made on his own playing.
Dugmore is a former member of John Stewart’s and Linda Ronstadt’s touring bands and has contributed to albums by Don Henley, Jake Owen, John Prine, Kenny Rogers, James Taylor, Randy Travis, and more. Fishell has recorded and performed with Emmylou Harris for forty years and has also recorded with Eric Church, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton. Additionally, he has produced #1 singles for Radney Foster and Pam Tillis. Maness is a member of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame who has played with the Byrds, Vince Gill, International Submarine Band, Buck Owens, Gram Parsons, and more. Perkins is a member of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame and Texas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame who has toured and recorded with Garth Brooks, Cher, Bob Dylan, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Dan Fogelberg, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Dolly Parton, James Taylor, and Dwight Yoakam.
