Emmylou Harris: Songbird's Flight
•
1h 33m
Country Music Hall of Fame member Emmylou Harris joins the Museum's Peter Cooper on stage at the CMA Theater to discuss her musical development, from childhood up through her partnership with Gram Parsons and the decades of solo success that followed. The November 3, 2018, program also includes stripped-down performances of Emmylou Harris’s songs.
The program complements "Emmylou Harris: Songbird's Flight," an exhibition at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum that similarly chronicled and illuminated her life and career. Harris expands on "Songbird's Flight" themes, sharing memories of her days as a college drama major, her first musical moves as a folk singer, and her introduction to and collaboration with Parsons, whose artistic influence and creative support spurred her musical career forward.
Harris talks about how friend and fellow singer Linda Ronstadt helped her process Parsons's death in 1973, and what it was like working with (and affording) the Hot Band, her celebrated crew of musical collaborators in the 1970s and early ’80s. She also explores producer Brian Ahern's contributions to her recording education, experiences working with fellow artists including Rodney Crowell, Ricky Skaggs, Daniel Lanois, and Buddy Miller, and the 1992 live album "At the Ryman," which helped inspire a revival of Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium.
The program wraps with Emmylou Harris performing her songs "Love And Happiness For You" (a track she co-wrote with Kimmie Rhodes, which appeared on her 2006 collaboration with Mark Knopfler, “All the Roadrunning”), and "Prayer In Open D," from 1993's "Cowgirl's Prayer," which Harris says she wrote on "the Prayer guitar,” an instrument that was included in the "Emmylou Harris: Songbird's Flight" exhibition.
“Emmylou Harris: Songbird’s Flight” exhibition dates: October 5, 2018 through August 4, 2019.
