Lori McKenna • Poets & Prophets, 2018
Interviews • 1h 28m
Singer-songwriter Lori McKenna has written and co-written a collection of country hits, including Hunter Hayes’s “I Want Crazy,” RaeLynn’s “God Made Girls,” Little Big Town's Grammy- and CMA Award-winning “Girl Crush, and “Humble and Kind,” a #1 for Tim McGraw.
Here, McKenna visits the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the songwriting-focused Poets & Prophets series, discussing her upbringing, her life in Massachusetts, her music, and her career, and performing some of her songs.
The 2018 interview and performance includes stripped-down versions of “Humble and Kind,” “Leaving This Life,” “People Get Old,” and “Girl Crush,” among other Lori McKenna songs. (For “Girl Crush,” co-writer Hillary Lindsey joins in on the performance.)
McKenna also offers insight into the stories behind how some of those songs were written, and how the artists who recorded them came into the picture.
Lori McKenna considers the values captured in the song “Humble and Kind” and shares memories of sending it to country star Tim McGraw, opens up about writing with Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey, and recalls Faith Hill bringing her onto a national stage around the album "Fireflies," for which McKenna wrote the title track (and other album tracks). McKenna also offers some details about her own eleventh studio album, "The Tree," recorded with producer Dave Cobb.
