Steel guitar master Robby Turner looks back on his musical journey and a storied career in country music during this 2019 program, presented as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Nashville Cats series, in support of the major exhibition “Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ʼ70s.”
Robby Turner has recorded with a wide range of musicians, including the Chicks, Jamey Johnson, Jim Lauderdale, John Prine, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Marty Stuart, and Country Music Hall of Fame members Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Randy Travis. He also toured with the Highwaymen, featuring Jennings, Nelson, and their fellow Country Music Hall of Famers Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.
During his Nashville Cats program, Turner reflects on his own beginnings as the child of two accomplished musicians, Doyle and Bernice Turner, both of whom played in Hank Williams’s Drifting Cowboys band. He shares stories he’d heard from his parents about Williams and their experiences in country music; speaks to his own start in the genre, learning to play “the most difficult of country music instruments”; offers context on how the steel guitar fits into country music’s overall sound; and discusses the many greats with whom he has worked.
