Hit songwriter Liz Rose performs compositions she had recorded by Eli Young Band, Little Big Town, Taylor Swift, and Carrie Underwood, and two originals from her debut solo album, “Swimming Alone,” during this June 20, 2018, program, part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Songwriter Sessions series.
Joined by Phil Barton on guitar, Rose opens with “Crazy Girl,” a hit for Eli Young Band.
“Every time I write a song, I learn something new,” she says afterward, “whether it’s about how to behave in the songwriting room, whether to fight through a song that’s not working. I try and learn from my situation, the write, the co-writer, every time. And it was just dawning on me, and I always do this, when I start singing, I’m going, ‘Yeah, you got this!’ And I get so confident that I will screw up somewhere in there. So, I learned that. And every time I play live, because I’m not really a performer, I learn something.”
The set list also includes “Tim McGraw,” recorded by her co-writer, Taylor Swift, as well as the title track from “Swimming Alone” and that album’s “Grocery Money.” She credits Lori McKenna with helping her compose the latter two songs. She also shares “Cry Pretty,” recorded by (and written with) Carrie Underwood.
Rose says she never expected that she would attend the Grammy Awards, let alone win one, then sings “White Horse,” another Taylor Swift co-write. Swift and Rose shared the 2009 Grammy for Best Country Song, while Swift’s version won Best Female Country Performance.
Liz Rose then sings two of her Little Big Town cuts: “Sober” and “Girl Crush,” both co-written with the Love Junkies (Rose, McKenna, and Hillary Lindsey). “Girl Crush” led to Rose’s second Grammy win for Best Country Song. The program ends with a sing-along rendition of “You Belong With Me,” another song written with (and recorded by) Taylor Swift.
