John Hiatt • Poets and Prophets • 2024
Live at the Hall

1h 36m
Acclaimed singer-songwriter John Hiatt performs and shares stories from throughout his fifty-year career as part of the Museum's Poets and Prophets series, which honors songwriters who have made notable contributions to country music. Museum writer-editor Dave Paulson moderates this edition, which was recorded on August 10, 2024.
During the program, Hiatt performs “Mississippi Phone Booth” from his highly regarded album with the Jerry Douglas Band, “Leftover Feelings,” as well as his classic song “Have a Little Faith in Me,” from his 1987 landmark album “Bring the Family.” He also performs “The Way We Make a Broken Heart” and recounts receiving a late-night phone call from Rosanne Cash while on tour in Europe informing him that her version of the song had become a country #1. Renditions of “Crossing Muddy Waters” and “Weightless in My Arms” round out the program.
Hiatt has established himself as one of the finest singer-songwriters of his generation, as well as a composer of both country and rock hits. Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, B. B. King, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, and Bruce Springsteen are among the artists who have covered his acerbic, soul-stirring songs. In 2008, Hiatt was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and received a lifetime achievement award for songwriting from the Americana Music Association. In 2019, he became the third recipient of the BMI Troubadour Award, which recognized his work as a songwriter.
